Staying active and engaged is important for people of all ages, especially older adults. On days like today, don’t let the rain dampen your activities.

Below are some fun indoor activities:

-Read a book

-Play cards

-Arts & crafts

-Watch movies

-Try a new recipe

-Exercise

-Call a friend or family member

-Schedule a friendly visit with a FIAMC Volunteer

Faith in Action of Marathon County (FIAMC) Volunteers would love to spend time with you doing any of the above.

If you are a current FIAMC Care Receiver, please call our office to schedule a friendly visit in-person or over the phone.

Interested in friendly visiting? FIAMC is growing and accepting applications for Care Receivers.

You must be 60 or over, reside in Marathon County, and be fully ambulatory. We do not accept individuals with a diagnosis of Dementia or Alzheimer’s.

To receive an application, you can print one off our website or call our office and we can mail you one. Our business hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Do you know 7 of the worst habits for your joints?

1- Smoking
Seniors who smoke are 30 to 40 percent more likely to break their hips than their nonsmoking counterparts.

2- Physically inactive lifestyle
Extra pounds are hard on your joints, especially those in the hips, hands and knees.

3- Overdoing exercise
Cramming in a week’s worth of exercise on the weekend isn’t doing any good for your joints. Research shows that daily activities are a much better route.

4- Carrying a heavy load
Consider a “heavy load” any amount of weight that requires more than one hand to pick it up.

5- Eating pro-inflammatory foods
Limiting pro-inflammatory foods like red meat, sugar, and dairy can decrease joint pain.

6- Frequent texting
The occasional text does minimal, if any, harm to your joints. To avoid joint pain, take breaks and consider using your smartphone’s speech-to-text feature.

7- Skimping on sleep
Skipping out on sleep can make any pain you experience in the daytime even worse.

Melanoma: Do You Know What to Look For?

Roughly 100,640 Americans will be diagnosed with melanoma this year, according to the American Cancer Society. The good news: Melanoma is highly curable if it’s caught early. Do you know what to look for?

1.) Moles that stand out-

Those that are darker than the rest of the moles you may have, have changed recently, or are more oddly shaped.

2.) Places that don’t see much for sun exposure-

Melanomas can develop anywhere on the body, including “in places the sun doesn’t shine.” This can include the soles of your feet, palms of your hand, under a fingernail, on the eyes, inside the mouth, or on the scalp.

3.) Red, white, and blue hues-

Melanomas are often dark-brown, but they can also present in a variety of colors. Red can mean the result of an immune response. It can look like a rash tasking on a pink hue. It can even lack color and appear as a white halo around a darker spot.

4.) Bleeding or itching-

The itching and bleeding is actually the body starting to recognize the cancer and starting to attack it, making it irriated.
